SOS - what if the worst happens?

We often get asked about travelling remotely, adventure riding means getting off the beaten track & mobile phone coverage is not guaranteed, particularly in Western Australia. We have always used some form of GPS to map trails & plan routes we intend to take. After much research, the Garmin Montana 750i gave us the best of both worlds. Along with all the mapping functions & a screen size that is easy to read while on the bike, this model includes full InReach technology.

We discussed many options for this subscription feature & eventually settled on a $40 per month annual plan. This means that the unit is always connected, we can pack up on the spur of the moment & hit the road without having to connect or turn on any features. In the event of an accident, the SOS feature is connected to Garmin & the usual response is activated.Alternatively if we break down, we have the ability to get a text message out asking for help.

When we travel to New Zealand we change the emergency contact details to friends & family we have there so that should the worst happen the contact is in the same country as us.

We purchased the charging cradle & ram mount to securely position the unit above the instrument cluster. It can be orientated landscape or portrait. We choose to use it in the landscape position as that fits best with no impact to the screen or other displays. The unit is water-resistant & designed for rugged outdoor use.

The MapShare feature is a great inclusion. On the level we chose, the unit tracks unlimited waypoints while travelling. This allows family & friends with the link to track us as we travel (or Leigh to spy on Regan when he does adventure without her onboard). If we stop for too long somewhere remote, this can be a trigger for them to check in. We have only used the SMS feature a few times, but it works well & is a useful option to check in with family if out of range for a longer time.

Check out the below video on our ride along Old Man Range with some technical information & plan details, while taking in a pretty awesome view.
